Do I need Therapy?

Many people wonder whether they "need" therapy. The truth is, you don't have to be in crisis to benefit from it. People come to therapy for many different reasons: they may be struggling with anxiety or low mood, feeling stuck in recurring patterns, navigating a difficult life event, or simply wanting to understand themselves more deeply.

Therapy can offer a space to pause, reflect, and make sense of experiences that may have felt confusing, overwhelming, or difficult to put into words.

You might find therapy helpful if you notice some of the following:

Emotional experiences

  • You often feel anxious, low, overwhelmed, emotionally numb, or irritable.

  • Your feelings seem confusing or difficult to manage.

  • You find yourself returning to the same emotional patterns despite wanting things to change.

Thoughts

  • You are often self-critical or find it difficult to be kind to yourself.

  • You spend a great deal of time worrying or replaying conversations and past events.

  • You feel stuck or unsure why you react in certain ways.

Relationships

  • You find yourself repeating difficult patterns in relationships.

  • You struggle with trust, closeness, or setting boundaries.

  • You feel lonely, disconnected, or misunderstood, even when surrounded by other people.

Daily life

  • You are withdrawing from people or activities that once mattered to you.

  • Changes in sleep, appetite, motivation, or concentration are affecting your wellbeing.

  • You rely on work, food, alcohol, social media, or other coping strategies more than you would like.

Life events

  • You are living through a significant change, loss, or transition.

  • Past experiences or trauma continue to affect your life or relationships.

  • You feel uncertain about your direction, identity, or sense of purpose.

What Therapy Is Not

Beginning therapy is not a sign of weakness, and it doesn't mean that something is "wrong" with you. You don't need a diagnosis, a crisis, or even a clear idea of what you want to talk about. Sometimes the decision to begin therapy starts simply with a sense that life could feel different, or with a curiosity about understanding yourself more fully.
