How do you know if you need Counselling or Psychotherapy?

This is something we can think about together during the initial consultation. Some people come with a clear, time-limited issue; others may realise they want to work at greater intensity. The duration, depth and frequency of therapy are shaped around your needs.

Therapy Pathways

What is Psychodynamic Psychotherapy?

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a longer-term form of talking therapy that helps you understand patterns in your thoughts, feelings, and relationships that may be outside of your awareness. These patterns often have roots in earlier experiences and can quietly shape how you respond to situations in the present.

In therapy, we take time to think together about what is happening in your inner world and in your relationships, including what may emerge between us in the sessions themselves. Over time, this can help you:

• Make better sense of recurring emotional or relational difficulties
• Develop a clearer and more stable sense of yourself
• Relate to others in ways that feel less stuck or reactive

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a time-limited, focused, form of therapy, typically lasting between 12 and 18 sessions. It is often helpful during periods of crisis or transition—after a loss, a relationship breakdown, or during a time of decision-making or stress.

In counselling, we aim to explore a specific issue or difficulty, using the same reflective and emotionally attuned stance as in psychotherapy, but with less intensity and a smaller scope.

While the scope is narrower, the approach still values insight and emotional truth, offering you the chance to think through a particular experience with care and depth. For some, this brief period of focused work is enough; for others, it can open the door to psychotherapy in the future.

Starting Therapy

You are welcome to book a free 15-minute video-call, which is confidential and carries no obligation to continue. This brief conversation offers an opportunity to outline what has brought you to therapy and to get a sense of whether working together feels right.

Alternatively, you may choose an exploratory full initial consultation, lasting between 50 minutes and one hour. This allows more time to think about your difficulties in depth, discuss your aims, and consider whether ongoing therapy would be helpful.

If you decide to continue, regular sessions are 50 minutes long and usually take place weekly, or twice weekly where appropriate. Fees operate on a sliding scale and are discussed openly during initial contact or consultation.
